What happened on Monday

After making an appointment on Friday, with a big shot from our local Y, I arrived at 7.45 AM on Monday. The parking lot was full and the Gyms were humming with all machines at full speed and mostly men panting, working up glowing patinas and much sweat.

My Y big shot who listened to my story about being totally graceless when attempting to rise from a sitting position and my desire to strengthen my quadriceps and my gluteus maximus introduced me to two chairs that she felt could improve the strengths of the two areas I mentioned. I did ten ups and downs with ease on the first one and then when I came to the second one I felt very insecure. My feet were sort of enclosed to make them feel secure, but the seat I sat on was a flat square surface, no bigger than a small book. I managed one push back, thinking I was going to run out of room in the back and land on the floor, but miraculously it stopped in time. The second one began OK, but half way back I fell off the chair, landed on my shoulder and my butt while my shoes were still tied in the foot thing. Luckily, as soon as my feet were untied I attempted to get up. My Y big shot and a gorgeous man who interrupted his work on a nearby machine helped me up.

After discussing my problem, I decided that I would attempt to strengthen my problem areas at home, and then I would join her class in balance when it begins in April.

There is no way could ever feel secure and dignified at that place. I hope they will hold the balance class somewhere else.

That sounds very uncomfortable. I hope your balance class is more private. You really amaze me with the things you step out and do.

Hopefully the balance class will be held in the middle of the morning - maybe around 10:00 am the place won't be so crowded with folks exercising before work?

Oh but think what a wonderful inspiration you'd be to all the glowing, sweating, patina-ed 'kids' to keep up their habits!

Good for you for striking out on a new adventure!

I wonder if your 'Y' bigshot realised she was dealing with a savvy physical therapist who possibly knew more than she did? Sounds like there was little respect shown! How about volunteering to put on a class for them?

They should have someone spotting you, especially if this was your first time on this equipment. I wouldn't feel very happy exercising in such a place either.

You've been quiet for quite a while, Mrs. S... I certainly hope you're recovering well from your gym incident. My Swedish great grandma Helen was active and engaged, much like you, and never let age slow her down. I remember that she'd go blackberry-picking with me when I was about 9 and she about 90, and the inevitable thorn scratches were so much more damaging on her arms than on mine. I loved that sweet, indomitable lady then and I love her still, and with her in mind I hope you're taking good care of yourself (or having too much fun doing other things to blog!).

I second what weecyn just said!

I found your blog because of Shreve's. I'm so glad I did! Your stories and thoughts are captivating. I can see where she gets some of her amazing character from.

I apologize for using your comments section for fan-mail, but I wanted to wish you well.

And if it's any comfort, I'm only 40, and I have fallen off several pieces of gym equipment!
